Do you really know who your friends are? What type of friend are you? Have you ever been faced with these questions? Has your loyalty, or trust ever been tested within the many friendships you have? Well, I have. This test made me realize that “good” friends are hard to come by. When you have people in your life that genuinely love you for you, you’ll never have to doubt your friendship. You see, friendship is built on trust, consideration, loyalty, and love. Trusting that even in the worst of times, your back is protected by your friends; consideration being a mutual unspoken agreement that the friendship isn’t one sided, or only conducive when one is getting something out of it; not self-seeking or ready to throw things in your face to remind you of all they have done for you, but it’s them doing those things out of love because it’s reciprocated; and being loyal.
I once heard someone say that the best time to have someone’s back is when they are not around to know that you did. For example, how do you speak of your friends to others when you are mad at them? Do you defend them when appropriate, or do you silently participate in the gossip and swirl? Love between friends is an unspoken given. Most of our friends we love like sisters and brothers and we regard them like family. With that said, I have also been challenged with friendship in my lifetime, realizing everything and everyone has a season in your life. It could be for a short time or forever. We may not know what this timing looks like, but through each season we learn more and more about ourselves and those around us. You see, real friendships last forever, they always persevere through the bad, and always willing to help celebrate the good. Your true friends’ loyalty will never waver and you never lose a night’s sleep wondering if that trust has been broken.
I have learned that friendship is about consideration, love, it is not selfish or self-seeking. Sometimes friendship can mean putting others before yourself. However, the most important lesson of all, is understanding the season.
